Facing the Forest in Kamakura
A Secluded Retreat Immersed in Nature
The property is nestled among trees, creating a sense of seclusion from the urban hustle and bustle. Initially, I envisioned a quiet life immersed in nature.
However, upon moving to Kamakura and living close to greenery, I was surprised by the vibrant sounds and presence of nature. The property is filled with the sounds of birds singing in the early morning, rustling leaves, croaking frogs in the summer, insect choruses in the fall, and the activity of nocturnal creatures at night.
Located in Kajiwara, Kamakura, this area is near Zeniarai Benten, with dense greenery, small streams, and cool humidity even on sunny days. The property is reached by climbing around 50 stone steps, with a house blending into the trees, featuring wood-grain exterior walls.
The house is southwest-facing on a descending slope, partially supported by a concrete structure and steel frames, with a water tank visible in the gap between the floor slab and the ground.
The building shows some wear and tear, and caution is advised when navigating to the second floor. The balcony offers a view of the surrounding greenery, giving a sense of being enveloped by nature. Some rooms on the second floor have poorly fitting shutters that only partially open.
A standout feature is the south-facing western-style room on the first floor, with glass doors creating a terrace-like atmosphere when opened. This room feels ideal for contemplative or creative activities.
Imagining further, combining two first-floor rooms into one and adding a high ceiling could create a unique space with light streaming in from the second-floor windows, resembling a floating box in the forest.
For winter, a wood stove could enhance comfort, though a kerosene stove might suit the building's ambiance. The dining floor requires extensive repair, and while the kitchen is old, the water heater and gas stove appear to have been updated.
The bathroom features an old-fashioned tub with a balance kettle, and the toilet has been upgraded from Japanese to Western style. Despite its age, the property has been updated for livability.
Caution is advised regarding the building's overall tilt and the significant wear on both interior and exterior, necessitating inspection and repairs for habitation. Depending on usage, the extent of repairs may vary, so viewing the property in person is recommended.
From a practical standpoint, demolishing the building and constructing a new one might avoid complications. However, the property's potential to create a unique space floating in nature is intriguing.
